Shaggy Rogers
Shaggy is the cowardly slacker more interested in eating than solving mysteries and is the best friend of Scooby-Doo. Shaggy's distinct personality is evident with his 1960s speech style and lanky appearance comprised of shaggy dirty blonde hair (from which his nickname is derived) and a rough goatee. He typically wears a green T-shirt and brown bell bottoms, further accentuating his sixties-esque appearance. Shaggy (along with Scooby) is defined by his nearly insatiable appetite and tendency to goof-off and act cowardly. When you analyze the character of Shaggy, you can conclude that he is under the influence of Marijuana. Marijuana causes hallucinations (which might explain why his best friend is a talking dog), a large appetite (which explains his constant consumption of large amounts of food), and slender appearance despite the constant eating (which Shaggy portrays). Shaggy's use of marijuana can explain why he's not sharp enough to solve the mysteries himself, since long term use of marijuana can cause memory loss. Shaggy's prevailing cowardly and anxious behavior can be a result of him suffering from a panic disorder and paranoia. When confronted with a mystery that seems frightening, Shaggy has difficulty relaxing, suffers from an intense feeling of dread, and becomes enveloped with fear and nervousness; all symptoms of panic disorder. Panic Disorder may be caused by substance abuse (which may derive from Shaggy's supposed marijuana usage), family history (which is depicted by Shaggy's uncle, Shagworthy who portrays the same cowardice), and major life stress (which is caused by the intensity of solving frightening mysteries). Panic Disorder can be treated with hypnotherapy; and this form of treatment temporarily helped Shaggy in cartoon movie, Legend of Phantosaur. In the movie, after Shaggy becomes inconsolably frightened (because of his panic disorder), Mr. Hubley hypnotizes Shaggy to become fearless and unstoppable when he heard the word "bad," and to switch back to normal when he hears it again (watch the video below). Shaggy's extreme cowardice and constant fear of the world around him also hints that Shaggy is suffering from Paranoid Personality Disorder. Symptoms of Paranoid Personality Disorder that Shaggy exhibits are difficulty relaxing, unfounded beliefs that danger is lurking, recurrent suspicions of paranormal threats, etc. Shaggy's fearful, anxious, and cowardly nature may definitely be attributed to Panic Disorder and Paranoid Personality Disorder.
