Velma Dinkley
Velma is the brains of the Scooby Gang. She is portrayed as a highly intelligent young woman with interests and knowledge in various academic fields. Velma often wants things to go the way that she wants and if it does not, a sense of anxiety overwhelms her. She is usually seen wearing a baggy orange turtleneck, short, red pleated skirt, knee socks, and Mary Janes; a more conservative and geeky appearance compared to the alluring Daphne. Her short, bobbed hair and thick-framed, square glasses, further defines her as the nerd of the group. Despite her geekier appearance, she is respected by her friends, especially because of her genius status and her ability to decipher complex clues and solve the mystery at hand. However, Velma can at times be competitive with other people who are very intelligent like she is. Based on her personality traits, Velma can be diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). People with OCPD obsess with order, rules, and expectations and this causes anxiety when things are out of a certain expected order. Symptoms of OCPD that Velma conveys are preoccupation with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules, perfectionism that interferes with task completion, excessive devotion to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships. People with OCPD also display reluctance to delegate tasks, hesitance to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things, and rigidity and stubbornness. While she does have a disorder, Velma conveys that maintaining order helps you understand what is out of place and allows you to have a sharper view of unseen clues. Velma is very adept at solving puzzles and putting together the pieces, due to her expectations of the order of things, and her constant anxiety that something is amiss. Along with Fred, Velma is the primary case solver and leads the Mystery Inc. gang in being the one to pull the “great reveal” at the end of each episode. Overall, Velma's OCPD allows Velma to be successful at solving the mysteries she is constantly faced with.
